After all these years, 5C 062-96918 is finally mine!
My uncle recently decided it was time to part with his collection of vinyl. It saddened me to hear this, as there's nothing I hate more than seeing a collection scattered to the wind...especially a collection that I'd long admired. (It also saddened me when I remembered that I gave him an Italian picture disc of Black Sabbath's Vol. 4 for Christmas last year. I guess I should've gone with the CD.)
He gave the records to his son to put up on eBay. As soon as his copy of Pink Floyd's Wish You Were Here showed up, I checked my PayPal account to see how high I could bid. I spent the week in anticipation. With 45 seconds left in the auction, my shaky hands typed in my bid and I took the prize. You might not think this is a big deal, but this was no ordinary copy of Wish You Were Here. This was the limited edition on blue vinyl that came out of Holland in 1977. I've had my jealous little eyes on it for years.
Here's something you might not know about me: If I had to make a list of my favorite things, I would put blue vinyl in about the #7 spot. I don't especially care for red vinyl or orange vinyl or green vinyl, but blue vinyl makes my heart flutter with happiness. I can stare at blue vinyl for hours. I can hypnotize myself with it.
If you're looking for me during the next week or so, I'll be on my front porch staring at the sun through a copy of Wish You Were Here. Feel free to stop by for a chat.

(Homer drooly sound) Aaaahhhhhllllllll...
We had a really cool blue-vinyl audio sampler LP when we were kids. It's still around, but it's mostly not blue anymore. I wish I could tell you what happened. Since yours is still blue it probably doesn't share the problem.
I have maybe 3 blue vinyls...off the top of my head, Blue Jean, by David Bowie, Something by 7 Seconds, I think it's their version of These Boots Are Made For Walking, and then No Wave which is light blue swirly but still transparent.
soooo what was the final bid and did you get free shipping?
So blue vinyl turns different colors with the passage of time?! Arggh. I'm just going to hope that those crazy Dutch people used a high quality process that won't fade or turn. I think if it was going to turn, it would've done it by now.
Just curious...what color did yours turn?
I have a blue vinyl 7" by a band called Holiday Flyer, but that was my only blue record until today. I mostly stare at them in music stores.
I paid $37. That seems a lot to me, but I would've kicked myself had I let it get away. And yes, I got free shipping. My parents were in Boston over the weekend (where my uncle lives) and they brought it home on the plane with them.
If it had been Rihanna (or whoever the kids are listening to these days) on blue vinyl, I wouldn't have bought it, but this version of Wish You Were Here successfully combines good music with an aesthetically pleasing presentation. I'm willing to drop dollars for that. Now if only I could figure out a way to listen to it while holding it up to the sun.
looking at the sun through it seems the right thing to do.
