Stuff I've Been Reading: A Monthly Column (11/08)

It's perfectly acceptable to start a sentence with "and." And though many frown upon ending a sentence with a proposition, it's common enough by now that few are likely to call you on it.
I think both are fine, but sometimes it dawns on me how little I actually know about grammar and sentence structure. I guess I'll continue to fake it and hope no one notices.
[this is good]
Shirley Jackson is one of my favorites.
Whoops. I wasn't done, but I hit post anyway. "The Haunting of Hill House" (Shirley Jackson) scares the hell out of me every time I read it.
I haven't read anything by Shirley Jackson yet, but the collection mentioned above looks to be a good intro. Maybe if I like it I'll give The Haunting of Hill House a try. I think that's one of her novels.
Yes, Hill House is a novel. The Lottery is one chilling short story, too.
It's a shame she died young (45?) of breast cancer, I believe.

I enjoyed The Baron in the Trees very much. Your review of If on a winter's night a traveler got me started reading both books, and I thank you for that, as well as the gift/loan of the Salman Rushdie book.

The Bunny Yeager book with 3D glasses sounds highly entertaining.

That book is actually kind of disturbing. A few of the pictures were printed incorrectly, so when you look at them through the glasses, the things that should be in the front appear in the back (and vice versa).

I'm glad I could get you to read some Calvino (although I know you already had some of his books). I think Scott told me about him.
