Stuff I've Been Reading: A Monthly Column (3/08)

[this is good]
I bought and read Memories of My Melancholy Whores, but maybe Marquez doesn't count in the genre of "whore" book titles people don't want to be seen reading.

I haven't read any my McSweeney's 26 yet, but I did notice when it came that it looked particularly underwhelming.

Good point about the Marquez title. I guess that blows my theory to bits.

I hope you enjoy McSweeney's #26. Although I would've preferred complete short stories as opposed to bits and pieces of forthcoming novels, there were a few goodies in there. There always are.

I still need to go back and read #25. I skipped over it for some reason.

Gentlemen of the Road looks weird enough to be really interesting. And if you're looking for top-secret assassins, I volunteer. Where do I sign up?

It is an interesting book, but at $22 for 200 pages (including illustrations), it's a bit overpriced. I wish I'd borrowed a copy from my library or waited for the paperback.

If I could tell you where to sign up, it wouldn't be top-secret, would it?

interesting list, as always. of this batch, I'd be most interested in reading Where to Invade Next. I need to get it.
I kept expecting Where to Invade Next to take some ultra-liberal turn or start mocking George Bush and the war on terror, but it never did. Instead, it presented the facts and the options available regarding the seven countries. It was a cool book. It felt like I was reading a secret government dossier.
