Stuff I've Been Reading: My Abandonment

Comments

Alrighty! I am going to read this book! So....I didn't finish your post! :)
Gosh I need to join a bookclub so you can review one for me? Do you do middle school book review homework as well?

Gosh, now I'm thinking I want to read this book for myself but you've spent so much time on this endeavour already. I'd hate to not take full advantage of your service.

So I'm going to save the rest of this post and if by December 1, I haven't read the book, I'll read this right before I go to book club. If I do read the book, I'll come back here and see if you caught something I didn't.

Regardless, I will pass off your thoughts as my own and no one in book club will be the wiser. I'll report back the next day so you can feel like you were there.

At least you enjoyed it and it wasn't too long!

It sounds so good....I have to skip the synopsis so I can savor the way the story unfolds.

If you can find the time, you should definitely read this book. I went in expecting a selection like those my mom reads in her book club. She reads overly sentimental garbage about sisters fulfilling their potential as human beings and crap like that. Your book club is much cooler. Thanks for the recommendation.
Yes, I do middle school homework. No math, though.

Hah! I can't believe anybody actually read any of this post, much less took the time to comment on it. It was really just an exercise in goofiness, but it's cool that I've drummed up a tiny bit of interest in the book.
I have to skip the synopsis...
You can never go wrong with skipping something I've written.

My book club also talks about the awful book, "The Informers", at every book club. It was the worse book I ever finished. There was not one single sympathetic or reedeming character. It got worse as it went on and there was no resolution.

What is the best part, is that the person who picked the book dropped out of book club before we met to discuss. Apparently her 'eyes hurt' and couldn't make it, and she's never been back.

We don't set out to talk about that book or our friend, but we end up talking about both every time.

I wouldn't say that....you're lots more interesting than the average bear!

Frickin' genius.
You know I still haven't finished Anna Karenina...
She throws herself under a train at the end. Have I ever mentioned that?
I'm not familiar with The Informers, but you don't make it sound very good. I don't think I'll check for it when I return My Abandonment to the library.

To be honest, I didn't know anyone actually talked about the books at a book club meeting. I'd always imagined it to be more a chance to get together, drink wine, and gossip...with the occasional pillow fight thrown in.

Maybe I'm thinking of slumber parties. I don't know.

Don't read it. It's awful. If the copy I have wasn't Cranky's, I'd burn it. I'm not a fan of burning books but this was so bad I want to save the world from it. So I'm conflicted. It needs to be destroyed but I don't believe in destroying books. I compromised by shoving it under a pile of other books, even though I should return it to its owner - because I hear she needs more stuff in her house.

We do eat, drink wine and gossip, but now there are husbands in the group and as much as they would love a good pillow fight, it's for the best if we all restrain. The men also keep the gossip level down, so we're left with nothing but books to talk about.

This is one awesome post. The "Something to Discuss in Your Book Club" section is tremendous. I might actually read this now.

Will Oldham should be in more movies.
I've destroyed two books in my life. The first was a collection of Walt Whitman poetry. I've always felt bad about that one. The second was a horrible novel by a guy named David Hollander. It deserved to be ripped in two and tossed in the garbage. No regrets there.

Will Oldham should be in more movies.

I read somewhere that he portrayed the father in a made-for-TV dramatization of the Baby Jessica story (kid falls in well, nation comes together in prayer). That must've been about 20 years ago. I never have been able to find a copy of the movie to verify.

On a related note, you were right about Superwolf. Good stuff.

That is true. Or, at least, I've heard it too. I've never seen it either.
Interesting review and analysis! I couldn't resist reading the whole post :)
